The Alaska Marine Science Symposium is an annual gathering of scientists, resource managers, and community partners focused on sharing research and advancing understanding of Alaska’s marine ecosystems.
Emily’s presentation, “Alexandrium cysts and June sea ice cover may influence walrus exposure to paralytic shellfish toxins,” examined how harmful algal blooms may be impacting the Pacific walrus in the Chukchi Sea.
Her team’s findings suggest toxin exposure may be more closely linked to seafloor cyst beds and June sea ice extent than to surface bloom concentrations — an important step toward understanding risks to walrus health and supporting informed stewardship.
Congratulations to Emily and her co-authors on this important Arctic research!
